    Mallorca Grape Guide

    Indigenous Grape Varieties of Mallorca

A short, honest guide to the native grapes that give Mallorca its identity — Manto Negro, Callet and Prensal Blanc — and how we work with them at TERRA IóN in the Sierra de Tramuntana.

    Manto Negro

Manto Negro is the signature red grape of Mallorca. Thin-skinned and heat-loving, it thrives on the island's limestone soils and gives elegant, medium-bodied wines with soft tannins, bright acidity and a distinct Mediterranean lift. Historically the backbone of Binissalem and Pla i Llevant reds, it rewards low yields and gentle extraction.

    Typical aromas

    • Ripe red cherry
    • Wild herbs
    • Soft spice
    • Warm earth

At TERRA IóN, Manto Negro is part of the heart of our organic reds — vinified with native yeasts to keep its perfume of wild herbs and warm Tramuntana stone intact.

    Red · Indigenous to Mallorca

    Callet

Callet is Mallorca's most delicate indigenous red — pale in colour, low in alcohol by nature, and remarkably fresh. Long dismissed as a bulk grape, it has been rediscovered as a true expression of the island: fine, saline, almost Pinot-like when grown on old bush vines. It pairs beautifully with light Mediterranean cooking.

    Typical aromas

    • Fresh red fruit
    • Pomegranate
    • Mediterranean scrub
    • Sea breeze

We work Callet as a partner to Manto Negro, adding freshness, lift and that unmistakable salty edge you only find close to the sea on Mallorca.

    Prensal Blanc (Moll)

Prensal Blanc — also called Moll — is the island's leading white grape. It gives round, textured whites with gentle citrus, orchard fruit and a chalky, saline finish that reflects Mallorca's limestone. It can be enjoyed young and fresh or, in the right hands, aged on the lees or in old wood for a more serious, gastronomic style.

    Typical aromas

    • Ripe pear
    • Fennel
    • Almond blossom
    • Chalky minerality

Our white expressions built around Prensal Blanc are made to feel like Mallorca in a glass — sunlit, herbal and quietly mineral.

    Frequently asked questions

What are the main indigenous grape varieties of Mallorca?

The three most important native varieties are Manto Negro (red), Callet (red) and Prensal Blanc, also known as Moll (white). Together they form the backbone of the island's DO Binissalem and DO Pla i Llevant wines.

What does Manto Negro taste like?

Manto Negro typically shows ripe red cherry, wild Mediterranean herbs, soft spice and a warm, earthy finish. It is medium-bodied with fine tannins and bright acidity — friendly, food-loving and unmistakably Mallorcan.

    Why is Callet considered special?

Callet is pale, fresh and low in alcohol by nature. On old bush vines close to the coast it develops a saline, almost Pinot-like character that has made it a rising star among lovers of terroir-driven Mediterranean wines.

Where can I taste Mallorcan indigenous grape varieties?

You can taste wines built around Manto Negro, Callet and Prensal Blanc directly at TERRA IóN in the Sierra de Tramuntana — either during a booked tasting experience or at our Wine Truck at the entrance of the winery.
